e-books

Two years ago I had the opportunity to pilot online books w. our students and now thanks to some innovative county leaders, we are, as a county, mostly going to e-books next year for our high school social studies classes.  When people ask me why I would want to do so, the video above is one good example from a company called Inkling which works w. McGraw, Pearson and other textbook leaders to produce interactive e-books.  Even better the e-books come with a ton of ancillaries such as links, video, and other "tools in a box" one can teach with interactive ideas using nothing other than the e-book. Throw in the Internet and you are talking about an amazing way to teach.  Also, you can see a competitor of Inkling, called Kno that has some of their own amazing wizardry on their single and double tablets as you can see below. (Thanks to Kleininspiration for the heads up on Inkling)

A few years ago I worked with some people at the Independence Hall Association in Philly to try to get some interactive e-books up and running. We never did get funding, but thanks to the precursor today we still have some great e-books left online.  One...

- So You Want To Use An E-book...
I am heading up a group that is doing our county's in-services at the end of January.  Since we are in the first year of using county wide e-books (fortunately we have been doing it for several at my school), I put together a Screencastomatic...

- Audio And Written Notes In An E-book
Kno is a start-up that is just about two years old, but is already working with tons of e-books to make them even better.  If you are toying with buying e-books, you can see what is starting to be out there.  In the above video, one sees how...

- Glencoe Resources Aplenty
As I prepare for an in-service in late August to help our county's teachers grapple with our new e-books, I will be giving you updates on the free ancillaries as I learn of them.  As usual Glencoe has the most free items online.  If you...

- E-books
Two years ago I asked to pilot an e-book for students at my school. We ended up doing it with all juniors.  One other middle school also did it and that spread to 16 schools in our county this past year.  Now we are almost definitely going to...
